He also contributed significantly to the Hornet, the Javelin, the Concord/Eagle, the AMX/3, and the Grand Cherokee ZJ. (Bob in fact, worked for Chrysler until ‘92.)

That article is an interesting counterpoint to this one (with regards to the Cherokee, anyway) , which talks about Renault’s influence on basically everything except the exterior design of the XJ.

It’s definitely overstating the hell out of Renault’s contributions, to put it mildly. Renault a partner in the Renix venture; Bendix was the technical leader. Renault didn’t design much of anything besides the notoriously bad electronic carb and some alternators and starters. They sold their entire stake by 1985. When AMC adopted the Renix injection system, Renault had nothing to do with it. And they sure as shit didn’t design it. And AMC was in bed with Bendix long before Renault. Check for yourself - the early XJ ABS system is Bendix.

Mostly, what Renault brought in, was better discipline. AMC’s ability to do more with less money was already more than respected - it was legendary. Especially their design departments. But Bob contributed to so many designs because of a real lack of discipline. He was supposed to be small cars, and they’d pull him in on full size regularly.

But man, what an atrociously sourced article that whole thing was. “The 4.0 was a 2.5 with 2 more cylinders.” No, you morons, the 2.5 was very specifically designed from day one to use the AMC 258 (4.2) straight six tooling. Which is why the mounts are identical between the two, as well as bore spacing. The actual path is: AMC 232->258(4.2)->2.5->4.0 which is... a 258 using the 2.5's improvements to the cylinder head design !
